What does a Graphic Designer do? continued...

Each design is different. To understand how design will solve a particular communication problem, the designer asks the following questions: What is the message? What will the audience see? How will they feel? And most important, what will they understand and take away with them?

Embracing new technology allows a designer to explore new ideas and discover fresh ways of doing things. But a graphic designer is not a desktop publisher. The medium does not define the designer: it is the designer who defines the medium. Talent, training and instinct are more important than the medium, whether it is a computer, a television screen or drafting table.

To shed light on how designers work with communication challenges, we will be writing a number of articles to explain how visual tools are used by designers to solve client's problems. We hope you find these articles informative and that they will help you understand what "creatives" do when they are locked in front of computer screens and art boards until all hours of the night.
